The Westbrook boys’ soccer team qualified for states by earning a victory versus Amistad in its final game of the regular season last week. On Sept. 2, the Knights traveled to New Haven to play Amistad and won the contest by a 4-1 score to make the Class S State Tournament, while also knocking the Wolves out of playoff contention. Westbrook finished with an overall record-season record of 5-8-3.

Westbrook opened the scoring with a goal from junior Doug Perrone-Gray in last week’s contest versus Amistad. Perrone-Gray’s goal was assisted by fellow junior Jonathan Bermeo. Amistad answered quickly with a goal off of a free kick to tie the score at 1-1.

Westbrook took control of the game during the second half, beginning with an unassisted goal from junior Derick Novillo to put the Knights up 2-1. Perrone-Gray followed with a breakaway goal for his second score of the game to make it 3-1.

Junior John Heringer finished the scoring by netting a goal on an assist by senior goalie Ryan Engels to cap off a 4-1 victory for Westbrook. Engels had 12 saves in net to go along with his assist.

Westbrook has the No. 28 seed in the Class S State Tournament and will play a first-round road game against No. 5 seed Old Saybrook on Monday, Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. With a win, the Knights would advance to the second round to face the winner of No. 12 seed Bolton and No. 21 Haddam-Killingworth in the second round on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.

The Class S quarterfinals take place on Friday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. The semifinals will be held from Tuesday, Nov. 15 to Thursday, Nov. 17; and the Class S state final is at Trinity Health Stadium in Hartford on either Saturday, Nov. 19 or Sunday, Nov. 20.

The Westbrook-Old Lyme (W-OL) field hockey team faced off against North Branford in the semifinals of the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week. The Knights took a one-goal loss versus the Thunderbirds to put their overall record at 8-7-2 entering the Class S State Tournament.

On Nov. 1, No. 4 seed W-OL played top-seeded defending champion North Branford in a Shoreline Tournament semifinal game at the Indian River Complex in Clinton. The Thunderbirds scored the lone goal of the game in the fourth quarter to earn a 1-0 victory versus the Knights and advance to the final, where they posted a 1-0 win over Old Saybrook to win their sixth-straight title.

Junior goalkeeper Abby Demers made 5 saves on 6 shots in net for the Knights against North Branford. Demers allowed no goals on any of North Branford’s 10 penalty corners in the semifinal contest.

W-OL will begin the second phase of postseason play by competing in the Class S State Tournament this week. The Knights have the No. 13 seed in the Class S bracket and are hosting No. 20 seed Haddam-Killingworth in the qualifying round at Westbrook High School on Monday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. If the Knights win, they will play at No. 4 seed Immaculate in a first-round matchup on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m.

The Class S quarterfinals are on Thursday, Nov. 10. The semis take place on Tuesday, Nov. 15 and Wednesday, Nov. 16; and the Class S state championship game will be hosted at Wethersfield High School on Saturday, Nov. 19.
