17 fishermen arrested in Odisha

Kendrapada (Odisha), Nov 6 (UNI) altogether 17 fishermen have been arrested and two vessels seized from them for trespassing into the “No Fishing Zone” of Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary, an official said on Sudnay/ The fishermen have been hauled up for catching fish illegally by violating provisions of the Orissa Marine Fishing Regulation Act (OMFRA), 1982, Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and Orissa Marine Fishing Rules, 1983.Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary Ranger in charge Manas Kumar Das said the sanctuary officials intercepted a fishing vessel on Saturday night and seized a GPS set, a VHF set and a plastic net while it was all set to catch fish near Barunei Mouth at the No Fishing zone,. The arrested fishermen have been identified as Gautam Barman(31) Birendra Barman,(56) Nimain Mandal,(34) Brajakishor Mandal, (34,) Bhikari Swain, (55,) , Samaresh Mandal,(42,) and Sandeep Munda, (25). All the accused were booked under Sections 27,29,31 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and produced before the JMFC court, Rajnagar, which remanded them to jail custody after rejecting their bail pleas. Earlier, forest personnel of Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary had intercepted another fishing boat on Friday and arrested 10 fishermen for unauthorisedly catching fish at the ‘No Fishing zone’ ., and seized about 30 quintals of marine fish catch, 12 trawling nets,3 VHF sets, 2 GPs, and other fishing equipment from the intercepted trawler. . The marine fishery department imposed a ban on fishing activities inside the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary of Kendrapara district from November 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023, to protect the endangered Olive Ridley Sea turtles, that come en mass for laying eggs to Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary.
