A commercial fisherman was taken by medical helicopter to a hospital after falling 10 feet at the Sandwich Marina on Monday morning, October 31 .

Nicholas Giordano, director of marina operations, said he called 911 at 10:03 AM as soon as he saw the man struggling on the dock.

“No one actually saw him fall,” said Mr. Giordano. “But someone was rushing to him as I was making the call.”

The Sandwich Fire Department was on the scene within minutes.

The man had been working on the upper rigging of the fishing boat Tempest, when he apparently slipped and fell onto the dock below, potentially hitting his head on a cleat.

Mr. Giordano described him as an “older gentleman,” which may have contributed to him losing his footing, as well as making his injuries more severe.

“It was pretty wet down here with the fog last night,” Mr. Giordano said.

The man was conscious after the fall and was instructed not to move until paramedics arrived. He was taken by ambulance to the medical helicopter, which landed at the former Henry T. Wing School.

This is the second time this year that someone has been seriously injured after a fall at the marina.

“It’s pretty uncommon, but it does happen,” said Mr. Giordano.
