A 19-month-old boy died after getting his head stuck in a goal net during a game of football at a day care center in Brazil.

Enrico Braga Souza was found unresponsive and trapped in a goal net on the soccer field of CEU (Centro Educacional Unificado) Meninos, in the south of São Paulo, this Wednesday, Aug. 31.

The stricken child was found by a teacher and was immediately taken to a nearby healthcare unit, before he was shifted to an ambulatory medical care facility.

Souza was pronounced dead a while later, reports said.

According to delegate Douglas Dias Torres, the boy, a student at the nursery, was participating in an extracurricular activity on the soccer field when the tragedy happened.

"I believe that he put his neck in that gap of the net and that he may have lost his balance and not have reached the ground with his hand. And, with the weight of his own body, it may have caused this fact," Torres said in an interview with Alert City.

"And, due to the weight of his own body, that may have caused this accident. There he remained and he fainted," he said.

Confirming the incident in an official statement, Sao Paolo's Municipal Department of Education (SME) said they were dismayed by what occurred.

"The child was attended by an emergency team, which carried out all the necessary procedures to try to revive him from a cardiorespiratory arrest, unfortunately without success."

"The service began at UBS Jardim Seckler, where first aid was performed, with an attempt to resuscitation of the patient, and immediate transfer to AMA Sacoma," the City Hall said.

Football experts advise to use smaller goal net mesh in games involving children.

It's A Goal said: "All children’s goalposts should have a smaller net mesh (100 mm sq) to avoid head entrapment. Use goal posts with these basic safety features and it will reduce the risks at your school or junior football club."

Police said an investigation was taking place that could "possibly lead to a manslaughter charge" (unintentional). Investigators are awaiting autopsy reports to confirm whether the death was due to asphyxiation.

In addition, security camera footage is currently being studied.
