The distraught mom of a tot who fatally fell from a Harlem hi-rise told cops she thought her son was safely playing in the next room — until she saw the netting on the balcony flapping in the wind, sources said Sunday.

The  mother and the toddler’s dad had been talking in the bedroom Saturday morning thinking their 3-year-old son, Jayce Garcia, was fine playing in the living room, the parents told cops, according to law-enforcement sources.

When the pair realized they weren’t hearing their son anymore, they began scouring the apartment, with the 30-year-old mom running into the living room — where she saw the loose mesh mosquito netting on the balcony, sources said.

When she looked down from the 29th-floor balcony, she saw Jayce’s tiny body on scaffolding on the third floor of the building next door, sources said.

Neighbors have told The Post they could hear the mom screaming, “My baby!” after the tragic fall.

The toddler was rushed to Harlem Hospital in critical condition, and he soon died, police said.

Police believe the boy’s death was an  accident, sources said.

Cops think the toddler walked out onto the balcony while his parents were in the other room, climbed over a chair to look over and fell, according to the sources.

Tenants  said that with the building’s air conditioning frequently not working,  many residents tend to keep their balcony doors open.

The boy’s dad, alerted by the mother’s scream, called 911, police said.

Cops said they were summoned to the  Taino Towers residential complex at Third Avenue and 122nd Street shortly after 11 a.m.

The tot’s parents, who were both interviewed by cops at the 25th Precinct station house after the incident,  had a strained relationship in the past, law-enforcement sources and neighbors said.

Records show that the toddler’s mother has an open case on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child dating to November, while the 24-year-old father has been named nine times in domestic-violence reports — seven of them as the victim.

Most cases against the pair, dating to 2018, have since been sealed.

“[The boy’s mom is] not doing well at all,” the baby’s maternal grandmother, Cherise Young, 49, told The Post on Sunday. “She’s not well at all.”

Young, who lives in Connecticut, said Jayce “was a very happy baby.

“His mother loved him very much,” she said. “It was a normal, loving relationship.”

Young said she only met Jayce’s dad “a couple of times.”

“I couldn’t tell you much about him because I don’t really know him,” she said. “I never had a relationship with him.”

The mom’s sister created a GoFundMe page for the family to give Jayce “the proper burial arrangements.”
